A MUM-OF-THREE battling cancer who has had her benefits stopped is among those to have gained from a store’s Christmas present appeal.

Asda Peterlee’s annual gift appeal saw more than 700 presents handed into the store during December.

As well as the family of the Peterlee cancer sufferer, the presents were also sent to Durham County Council’s social services department, via the authority’s One Point facility, to be distributed among needy families.

Around 100 of the presents were also donated to Peterlee Women’s Refuge, and Stonham Housing, in Shotton, which provides accomodation for 16 to 24-year-olds.

And furry friends have not gone without this Christmas as the store also donated three trolleys full of food to be donated to animal shelters and Deerness Kennels.

Staff and customers have also donated goods to help feed families this Christmas via foodbanks. Karen Bell from the store said: “A huge thank you to all.”
