Car boot sales deferred again

PLANS to use a section of car park at a tourist attraction for a car boot sale have been deferred until officers provide more information.

Hartlepool Council is looking to hold weekly sales on Saturday mornings in the car park outside Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience (HME)

The plans have been backed by independent councillor Cath Hill, portfolio holder for children’s and community services, but they need planning permission.

Planning committee members wanted further reassurances about parking arrangements when the car boot sale is on and whether or not people would be forced to park on Maritime Avenue, which they were against and queried if a parking restriction order for that road could be put in place during the car boot sale.

Labour councillor Robbie Payne said: “If you go down Maritime Avenue Monday to Friday there are cars parked both sides of the road.”

The council is looking to generate income by allowing a third of the car park for the new venture alongside Noble Promotions.

Katie Hammond, who works within the council’s events department, said the car boot sale would only take up a third of the main HME car park, which would be fenced off and managed, and the rest of the site would be available for parking.

But Conservative group leader Ray Wells said: “I have tremendous concerns about this application.

“I think we are creating a problem for ourselves. I think there will be an income but I don’t think that it has been thought out and it should be looked at in greater detail.”

Independent councillor Paul Thompson said he believed the application should be deferred until further discussions have taken place and said he couldn’t vote in favour based on the current information.

The report is expected back before the committee next month.

The proposals also cover ad hoc events, which in the past has included car rallies and the Maritime Experience and farmer’s markets, which are held once a month on a Saturday.

If approved, the weekly car boot sales will be included in HME’s events programme and used to attract visitors.
