Carrie on running

A VISUALLY-impaired woman whose aunt took part in a charity race while battling cancer is taking part in the run in her memory.

Carrie Beckwith's aunt, Eve Scarth, took part in the Race for Life last year while she battled breast cancer.

Sadly she lost her two-year fight in February, aged 71 but her determined niece is taking part in this year's race in her memory, despite being visually impaired since birth.

Carrie, who lives in the Clavering area of Hartlepool, relies on the use of a white cane to get around.

But the determined 27-year-old has not let this hold her back and she is set to take part in the three-mile race, which starts and finishes at the Marina , to raise money for Cancer Research.

Carrie, who suffers from photophobia, meaning her eyes are incredibly sensitive to light, said: "She was such a selfless person and she had a big impact on me.

"The way she dealt with everything was inspirational.

"She took part in the race last year and had to be pushed in her wheelchair, but she still did it. That has given me the determination to do it.

"If Eve could do it while she was battling cancer I can do it."

Carrie added that her partner will be helping her to walk around the course on Sunday, June 15.

She said: "I am visually impaired so I have the extra challenge of not falling over or bumping into people on the day.

"I think this will be a really big challenge for me and if it is a sunny day, it will be very painful on my eyes. I probably won't be able to use my white cane as the race is on the promenade and it has cobble stones, so that is why my partner is walking with me.

"Eve would be really touched if she knew I was doing this and my family are really proud."

Carrie has set up a group on social networking website Facebook, where people can enter the names of people they have lost to cancer.

Carrie said: "It is really important to me to be able to raise the money to help people to fight the illness.

"I have raised 105 so far but I would like to raise so much more.
