Cash boost for hospice services
VITAL funds have been raised for a cash-strapped hospice that could be facing job cuts.
Hartlepool and District Hospice has welcomed the 22,105 raised from its Light up a Life campaign in December last year, which gave people the chance to remember their loved-ones who are no longer with them.
Jobs and services at the hospice, in Wells Avenue, Hartlepool, are under threat after a 150,000 cut in funding from Hartlepool Primary Care Trust.
Hospice chief executive Tracy Woodall said: "The funds raised from this event will now help us continue providing our vital care to hundreds of families who need access to specialist care and bereavement support."
The hospice held two Light up a Life services in December, at Hartlepool Maritime Experience and St Cuthbert's Church, Peterlee, which included readings, carols and the illumination of lights dedicated in memory of loved-ones.
Mrs Woodall added: "Light up a Life is always a very special event for the local community and this is shown in the generous support we receive each year.
"Christmas can be a difficult time for many people and Light up a Life gives people the opportunity to stop and pay tribute to their loved-ones who are no longer with us.
"Both services that were held to mark the event were very popular and we would like to thank everyone who came along and all those who dedicated a light on our trees for their support."
All donations from Light up a Life help to maintain and develop the care and support the hospice service for families in the Hartlepool and east Durham area.
This year it will cost the hospice 2.5million to maintain their current level of care, with only 20 percent coming from the Government.
Gerald Martin, of Mason and Gerald Martin Funeral Services, which sponsored the event, said: "We are delighted to support Hartlepool and District Hospice, our local hospice."
