Cash raised for Timmy

CARING staff at a popular chippy have raised hundreds of pounds towards the medical bills of a holidaymaker who broke his neck after a prank went wrong.

Mariners Fish and Chip Restaurant, in Hartlepool, raised 316 to help Timmy Russell pay his medical bills after fracturing his seventh vertebrae during a lads' holiday in Magaluf.

The 29-year-old – who is facing a 6,000 bill – jumped 10ft head-first off a bridge into a hotel swimming pool on the first day of his holiday.

Staff at the chippy, in Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, saw an appeal for help and brought a teddy bear to raffle.

Mum-of-two Jackie Alton organised the raffle as Timmy is a family friend.

The 46-year-old, who is married to Billy, 54, a HGV driver, said: "We were really pleased with the response to the raffle and we were delighted to raise more than 300."

Kevin Turton, who owns the fish and chip shop, also donated 50 to the fund.

Timmy said: "I am really grateful to the staff and customers at Mariners for helping to raise 316, it is really appreciated and this will help us a lot."

He is currently wearing a specialist neck brace – called a halo – to support his neck, back and shoulders, which he was given at the Son Dureta public hospital, in Palma.

After his accident the dad-of-two was first taken to the Juaneda private hospital where the bill for his five-night stay is expected to be around 6,000.

His insurance company has refused to pay out because the injury was self-inflicted, plus there were warning signs around the pool at the Fiesta Jungla hotel in the sunshine resort.

Timmy's partner, Hollie Lynas, 23, who is mum to their four-month-old son, Oliver, had flown to Palma to be with him.

Former High Tunstall pupil Timmy, who lives in Everett Street and works at Comet, flew to Magaluf on Sunday, August 15, for a week-long break.

He also has another son, Luis Russell-Huntley, eight, with former girlfriend Hayley Huntley, 28, a shop assistant from the Rift House area.

A charity night was due to be held last night at the Corporation Club, in Whitby Street, to raise money to help pay the medical bill.
