Charity trek challenge

A BRAVE cerebral palsy sufferer is planning to do a gruelling coast-to-coast trek to try and raise cash for a charity which helps his mum.

Michael Andrews, 31, who lives in the Headland area of Hartlepool, is walking 190 miles from St Bees, in Cumbria, to Robin Hood's Bay, in North Yorkshire, later this month.

Michael, who lives at home with his mum Sheila, 65, and 68-year-old dad Raymond, is putting on his walking boots to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Trust.

The charity is close to Michael's heart as his mum suffers from the disease.

Michael has been training since February for his trek, which starts on September 18.

Michael, who is currently unemployed, said: "The reason I chose Alzheimer's Research is because a lot of the other charities for Alzheimers focus on making people with it feel comfy in their later life, but Alzheimers Trust is pro-active and working on the cure."

Referring to his own condition, he added: "Cerebral palsy effects my mobility and balance and I get fatigued if I am standing for a long time.

"In the early days of my training my cerebral palsy made me feel more tired and I felt like I was doing twice as much as other people would.

"And sometimes it felt like my joints were stiffening up."

Michael has set himself a target of 1,000, and has passed sponsorhsip forms around Hartlepool to help him reach his goal.
