Child abuse trial halted
THE trial of a man accused of sexually abusing a woman when she was a child was halted yesterday.
The jury in the case of Arthur Gray, at Teesside Crown Court, was discharged yesterday after the alleged victim complained of feeling unwell while being cross-examined.
Gray, 71, faces four counts of rape and nine counts of indecent assault, which he denies.
The offences, spanning four years, are alleged to have happened in Hartlepool several years ago.
The trial started on Monday and has so far only heard from the alleged victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
The case was due to last for the rest of the week.
A new trial in front of a fresh jury will be set to take place as soon as possible. The date will be fixed by the court next week.
Gray, of Magdalene Court, Seaham, was bailed in the meantime.
