Circus heads new features for traditional town show

ROLL up, roll up – the circus is coming to town.

After a major revamp, the annual Peterlee Show takes place this weekend and organisers, Peterlee Town Council, are hoping it will be the best yet.

The show, now in its 38th year, has an action packed programme which kicks off on Saturday at 10.30am with a parade, which will see jazz, brass and pipe bands , as well as community groups marching from the leisure centre to the Show Field.

Janet Hugill, show co-ordinator, said: "The show needed a new look, so we have totally changed the layout and there are great new attractions.

"The weekend promises to be filled with fun for all the family, and this year, we have the circus. There will be trapeze artists, jugglers and clowns, and children can also learn circus skills at the workshops that will be taking place."

A horticulture show will also be held in one of the marquees and this year there is a new children's section which green-fingered youngsters up to the age of 11 can enter.

Ms Hugill added: "Businesses will be battling it out against one another in It's a Knockout, which will be held in the main arena on Saturday.

"We also have a companion dog show where owners will be competing with their furry friends. There will be lots of arts and crafts, too.

"Also new to this year is the Wellness marquee where people can try out therapies such as Reiki and crystal healing."

Crowds can sing along to some of the old time favourites from musicals when Maldow Productions takes to the stage on Saturday and the act will be followed by performances by the Emerald Thieves, The Nikki Kita Show and Gangsters of Ska.

Bill Jeffrey, leader of Peterlee Town Council, said: "We're hoping people will love the new format. It's very exciting - we have even got a rugby tournament."
