College voted top for sport
STUDENTS are celebrating after being voted top for sports in North-East England.
Hartlepool Sixth Form College has been named the British Colleges' North-East Sports College of the Year out of almost 40 colleges stretching from Northumberland to Lincolnshire.
Bosses at the college, in the town's Blakelock Road, are delighted with the achievement and have championed their students for their sporting successes.
Director of sport for the college, Ben Robinson, said: "This is an outstanding example of a small college punching above its weight in that over the last three years we have had 75 students reach national qualifiers in a variety of sports in a region which stretches as far north as Northumberland and south to Lincolnshire.
"For the 2010 British Colleges Sport National Championships we had 29 students qualify and participate, which was a fantastic achievement for a college of just over 900 students.
"It is a huge testament to all the staff involved who often have to travel a long way for regional tournaments and provided some excellent coaching to teams throughout the season."
The announcement was made at the British College's North-East annual general meeting, where there was a panel of British College's sports representatives who considered a range of criteria including participation and success in tournaments.
The college's rugby team have represented North-East England in the national championships for the third year running, while the men's football team had the honour for the first time this year.
The college also had a swimmer, a trampolinist, men's table tennis doubles team, a squash player and a member of the female rugby team representing the region.
Swimmer Poppy Hutchings, 17, came second in the 50m butterfly, while squash player Daniel Hockborn, also 17, won a silver medal in the competition.
The table tennis doubles team came a creditable fifth.
The men's rugby union side are the only North-East college team to participate in the British Colleges' North elite league.
The netball side finished third in the North-East league while the men's basketball team reached their final.
The netball team have now been asked to play in the British Colleges super league with the top 16 colleges in the country.
It has also been confirmed by the FA that the college has achieved Football Focus status.
The college is looking forward to record recruitment on its sporting programmes in September when the final phase of the 24m new build is completed.
The new facilities include a county class sports hall and fitness suite.
