A MUCH-LOVED nursery nurse who has help care for and educate thousands of children during her 33 years service has retired.
Hartlepool woman Karen Angus started her first job at St Cuthbert’s Primary School nursery, in Stratford Road, in 1980, and has worked there ever since.
The 51-year-old told the Mail that she has loved her time at the school and she will miss the kids dearly. But she feels the time has come for her to step down.
Headteacher at the school, Joanne Wilson, today described Karen as an “asset to the school who will be missed by the community, the children and all of the staff”.
She said: “Mrs Angus is a very quiet and unassuming person, but she has a real heart of gold.
“She has served the community and the families of this school for 33 years and has done so much for use really. She is a real family link.
“I’m quite new to the school so I haven’t had the privilege of knowing her for very long. But the reaction from the other staff when we heard she was retiring said it all really.
“The things people have said to me about her have been lovely and I know how much she’s loved by the community, children, parents and staff.”
Karen, who is married to Phil and lives in Seaton Carew, said she will spend her retirement caring for her granddaughter as well as finding time for herself.
“It’s gone really fast, I don’t know where the years have gone really,” she said.
“This was my first proper job and I’ve been here ever since.
“It’s been nice seeing all the generations of families coming through the nursery and then into the school.
“There are some parents who were at the nursery with me and now their children are here. It’s lovely.”
The mum-of-two and grandmother-of-two, added: “I’ll really miss the children and all the funny little things they come out with. I’ll also miss the staff at the school.
“However, the time is right to go, though I think I’ll be kept busy.”
The nursery classes held parties for Karen on her final day on Wednesday and she received dozens of gifts – prompting a tear or two.
“I couldn’t help it. It is sad but I do have things to look forward to,” she added.
