KIND-HEARTED students and teachers who tackled a gruelling bike ride have handed over hundreds of pounds to a hospice.
Teenagers Christopher Marshall-Bell, Christian Caswell, Craig Risebury and Simon Flaherty, who all attend English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College, completed the 142-mile coast-to-coast challenge.
The 17-year-olds, who are all keen cyclists, were joined by three teachers on the mammoth coast-to-coast challenge from St Bees Head, in Cumbria to Hartlepool.
Teachers Mark Blackwood, Chris Glynn and Joe Palmer, helped ensure the fundraising event went smoothly.
The dedicated group took just four days to complete the mammoth challenge in aid of the Hartlepool & District Hospice, in Wells Avenue.
The charity challenge helped raise a total of £770.63 and that has now been handed over to hospice chiefs.
Mr Blackwood said: “We were all delighted that the bike ride managed to raise so much money.
“It was a great effort from everybody that took part.”
Teacher David Riddle was also heavily involved in the planning of the event.
The group completed the challenge during the summer, staying in youth hostels and B&Bs along the way and the sponsorship money has now been handed over.
Staff and students all managed to make it back to Hartlepool safely after the gruelling ride, which included four huge climbs.
The coast-to-coast route involved crossing the Lake District National park, the Pennines and the Tees Valley before culminating with fish and chips at Hartlepool Marina.
As well as collecting sponsorship, the group’s fundraising efforts were boosted by holding crisp and cake sales at the school.
