Councillor steps down for family reasons

A COUNCILLOR has stepped down from his position as head of elections for a national political party in order to spend more time at home.

Hartlepool Councillor Stephen Allison has held the title for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) for the past three years.

However, being in charge of the UKIP campaigns meant that he was spending more and more time away from his family.

UKIP came out on top of the votes for the borough of Hartlepool in the European Parliament elections.

The party – which campaigns for Britain's withdrawal from the EU – beat second-placed Labour by 530 votes.

It was the first time in 50 years that the Labour Party has been beaten in a national election in Hartlepool.

Coun Allison, 49, a dad-of-two is married to Sandra, 49, a chiropodist, who was a UKIP candidate in the recent European elections and they live in Hurworth Burn.

Coun Allison, a self-employed business advisor based in Hartlepool, said: "When I first started it was UKIP who, but now we are an internationally recognised party and it has been a wonderful three years."
