Couple on course to start married life

A COUPLE were under starter's orders when they achieved a first at a racecourse.

Mark Burton and Donna Griffiths were married at a sun-drenched Sedgefield Racecourse on Saturday.

The civil ceremony for the Trimdon Station couple was the first to take place in the ground's pavilion.

Mark, 27, an electronic engineer, said: "I've never really been a church person so we were looking for something a bit different.

"The racecourse is a really nice place and it jumped out straight away when we looked at places that had wedding licences. We also got the weather so it couldn't have gone better."

Mark and Donna, 25, who works as a first aid trainer for the NHS, had their reception at Durham Castle before jetting away on honeymoon to Sharm el Sheikh, in Egypt.

Jill Williamson, general manager of the racecourse, said since getting a licence to carry out weddings, the course now also has a dedicated wedding co-ordinator to help plan couples' big days.

She added: "This is a thrilling moment for us all at the racecourse, our first wedding.

"We are delighted for Mark and Donna. They enjoyed the most wonderful day and we wish them all the very best for the future."
