Couple's sausage fire drama
A COUPLE had a lucky escape after a pan of sausages they were cooking caught fire in the early hours of this morning.
Fire crews were called to a house in Straker Street, in the town centre area of Hartlepool, at 1.20am today.
Two fire engines from Stranton Fire Station and one from the Headland attended the incident after reports of a kitchen fire.
On arrival the pan fire was already out after a woman inside the house threw the pan into a downstairs toilet.
There was minimal smoke damage to the property and both of the occupants refused medical help from the ambulance crew called to the scene.
No smoke alarms were fitted inside the house and fire chiefs have reminded people of the importance of having one installed.
Andy Robinson, watch manager at Stranton Fire Station, said: "Somebody inside the house had left a pan of sausages which then caught alight.
"The fire was out when we arrived. They were very lucky because there wasn't a smoke alarm fitted inside the house.
"Once again we would stress the importance of having a smoke alarm fitted inside the property.
"Also, when anybody is cooking it is vital not to leave the pans unattended."
Fire crews were at the scene for almost an hour.
