D-Day for nudist beach

PROPOSALS for a designated nudist section on a popular beach have moved a step closer with civic chiefs agreeing to go on a site visit.

Councillor Victor Tumilty will visit potential locations in Seaton Carew with naturists before making a final decision.

Hartlepool Borough Council was approached by the Three Rivers Club about the possibility of designating the south end of the beach, adjacent to Seaton Carew Golf Club, as a "clothing optional" area.

Coun Tumilty met yesterday to discuss the proposals and agree to the October site visit before it goes back to his culture, leisure and tourism portfolio. One suggestion raised was the possibility of designating the beach south of the North Gare, known as the Blue Lagoon, as "clothing optional".

John Mennear, the council's assistant director of community services, said there were no remote beaches in the town and that they are all well used.

Mr Mennear, who said members of the Three Rivers Club did not want an isolated section of beach, added: "We would need to make sure that it doesn't spoil anybody else's enjoyment of the beach.

"If we agree to designating a section of beach then it won't just be for this group, it could be used by anyone in the country. Will we be inundated with naturists at Seaton Carew or would it be a designated beach that they may or may not use? That is a difficult question that we cannot answer."

Coun Tumilty added: "I just wonder if this is right for the town and right for the people of the town but we can only judge by the public reaction.

"Although the beach can appear deserted at times, the car park is still very busy with people walking along the dunes.

"I am happy to note the report and to go on a site visit."
