A 36-hour extension has now been granted until just before midnight on Saturday night.
Darwin is being questioned about possible fraud issues relating to his disappearance.
The former prison officer was declared dead little over a year after his shattered canoe was washed up near his home in The Cliff, Seaton Carew, on March 22, 2002.
