Darwin appears before Hartlepool court

BACK-FROM-THE DEAD John Darwin arrived back in Hartlepool today when he was taken to court in a police van.

Darwin, 57, who turned up last weekend more than five years after apparently dying in a canoeing accident, faced magistrates as they listened to an application by detectives to continue holding him in custody.

A 36-hour extension has now been granted until just before midnight on Saturday night.

Darwin is being questioned about possible fraud issues relating to his disappearance.

The former prison officer was declared dead little over a year after his shattered canoe was washed up near his home in The Cliff, Seaton Carew, on March 22, 2002.

Further updates on this story will appear later today.
