Date for convicted baby killer appeal set
A DATE has been set for the appeal court hearing of convicted baby killer Suzanne Holdsworth.
The 37-year-old was given a 10-year prison sentence in 2005 for killing two-year-old Hartlepool toddler Kyle Fisher while babysitting him.
She maintained her innocence but a jury at Teesside Crown Court found her guilty of killing Kyle, who suffered from head injuries while in her care at her home in Millpool Close on the Central Estate in July 2004.
Lee Spencer, her long-term partner, says legal advisors, including Campbell Malone from Wigan-based Stephensons Solicitors, believe medical evidence will finally clear her.
A hearing was held at the Court of Appeal yesterday and a date has been set for April 22, at which Holdsworth will discover whether her conviction will be quashed, upheld or a re-trial ordered.
Mr Spencer, who now lives in Leeds, said: "This is a major step forward, it's been a long time coming.
"I have always said Suzanne was innocent and I will fight her corner every day as I have done since these allegations first came to light.
"After all of this time, on April 22, we will find out exactly what is to happen.
"Substantial medical evidence has come to light which we believe proves that the injuries were not carried out while Kyle was in Suzanne's care.
"I have spoken to Suzanne and she is absolutely ecstatic, she doted on Kyle.
"Unfortunately this will mean everything gets dragged up again for the family and we don't want that.
"We never wanted that but hopefully we are one step nearer closure for everyone."
Kyle's father, Jon Taylor, of Houghton-le-Spring, has also previously said he wasn't 100 per cent sure that Holdsworth killed his son.
Holdsworth has already served just over two years of her 10-year term at Low Newton prison.
During the trail, she claimed Kyle suffered a fit and that his injuries must have been sustained before he came into her care.
But a Teesside Crown Court jury heard medical evidence that showed the injuries he received were consistent with his head being hit against a wooden bannister.
