Dedicated Hartlepool teacher worked at same school since 1976

St Joseph’s Primary School teacher Pamela Maughan, 61, has said she was sad to leave the school based on Musgrave Walk, but was looking forward to see what the future holds.

Mrs Maughn, who joined the school in April 1976, has taught generations of children - including her own children and grandchildren.

The much-loved teacher said: “St Joseph’s has been a big part of my life and the people there are like a family to me, as I have been there a long time.
“Someone once said that the school feels like a big hug, as it is so welcoming and I have always thought that was a wonderful thing to say.

“I have been married 40 years and been at the school 40 years and both my children and my grandchildren have gone to St Joseph’s.

“It’s been wonderful, but now I am moving on to another era in my life.”

While at the school, Mrs Maughan, has taught children a variety of subjects and has taught generations of the same families.

The grandmother has also been a youth worker for over 20 years for Hartlepool Youth Service, and said she may consider doing youth work again in her retirement.

She said: “I have seen the school change a lot over the years and even the surrounding area has changed.

“I am retiring for now, but I may get involved in other projects.”

A spokeswoman for the school said: “Mrs Maughan has been a real blessing to the school.

“Over the years she has taught a range of subjects including citizenship, art club and netball.

“She has even taught the generations of the same family and is well-loved at the school.”
