Developers insist 2,000 homes plan will benefit Hartlepool for years to come

MORE than 2,000 new homes and a variety of community facilities will meet the future needs of an area of Hartlepool over the next 20 years, say developers.

Plans for the major development on the outskirts of town at High Tunstall went on display yesterday.

People are encouraged to have their say on the scheme before initial planning applications are lodged with the council by the end of August.

A new company comprised of experienced property developers called High Tunstall Homes has been set up specially for the scheme.

It is intended on 273 acres of land off Elwick Road and would also include the first part of a western bypass road.

The applicants say Hartlepool Borough Council cannot show how it can meet the town’s housing needs for the next five years.

Steve Barker, of Prism planning consultants and the development’s managing director, said: “If you pepper developments around a series of smaller sites, none of those would have the ability to deliver the strategic highway upgrade.

“Every type of housing will be accommodated from low cost two-bedroom to six bedroom executive homes.”

A drop-in session took place yesterday at Ekwick Academy of Dance.

Another is taking place today at Hartlepool Central Library cafe, in York Road, between 10am-1pm.

Mr Barker added: “People have been saying if we have to have housing they can see the logic behind this approach.

“They want to be assured over things like flooding and that it won’t make the highway situation significantly worse.

“People can also see the sense of providing that link road that the town is missing.”

The development also include plans for a small shopping parade, pub, crèche, GP surgery and care home.

Another feature of the development will be the creation of lakes and ponds that will hold rainwater and aid wildlife.

As well as providing an attractive feature, Mr Barker said it will help prevent flooding on other areas.

People have until Monday, August 4, to comment before the first application is submitted to the council.

There are also separate plans for 20-40 executive homes off Coniscliffe Road, at West Park.
