Dog found dead after being weighed down and thrown in water

A DOG was found dead after being thrown into water with two weights around her collar.

The RSPCA is investigating after the Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog was found in an area of marshland near Saltholme, on the outskirts of Hartlepool.

Today, a spokesman for the charity said the incident, while still being probed, may well have been "quite extreme animal cruelty."

A member of the public spotted the dog while walking across marshland close to the Saltholme reserve on Monday.

While the cause of death has not yet been determined, RSPCA chiefs say the dog had two 1.25kg weights attached to its collar.

The dog was brindle in appearance and a young female.

RSPCA inspector Nick Jones said whoever was responsible had gone to great lengths to attach the weights.

Anyone who may have information should contact Inspector Jones on the 24-hour RSPCA cruelty line on 0300 1234999.
