Drink-drive dad is banned

A JUDGE branded a single dad-of-two a “danger” before banning him from the roads for driving while over double the legal alcohol limit the wrong way down a one-way street.

Barry Lane was driving a Renault Scenic car when a passing police officers’ attention was “drawn” to him, Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 46-year-old had turned into Lucan Street, in the town centre of Hartlepool, and began driving down it the wrong way.

Prosecuting, Andrea Milson said: “It was 12.10am when officers’ attention was drawn to the vehicle as it turned onto Lucan Street through a ‘no entry’ sign.

“He then turned onto a different road and came to a stop at a junction for no apparent reason, as there was no on-coming traffic.”

She added: “The officer urged the vehicle to stop and when he was taken to the police station it was found he had 94 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.”

The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Lane, who is of previous good character, represented himself in court and pleaded guilty to drink driving on January 30, saying there was “no explanation” for the offence.

District Judge Martin Walker told him: “Had somebody been coming up that street the right way, then with the amount of alcohol inside your body you may not have been able to avoid an accident.

“The reading was so high that you would have represented a danger to other road users.”

Judge Walker banned Lane, a labourer, of Burns Avenue, in the Rift House area of Hartlepool, from driving for two years and ordered him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.
