Driver quizzed over cycle death

A DRIVER involved in a crash in which a cyclist was killed on a quiet country lane has been arrested.

The 41-year-old driver of a red Suzuki Swift, who was involved in the tragic smash on Saturday evening, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

Cyclist Kevin Bratt, 51, died in the collision at around 5pm on Dalton Back Lane, between Dalton Piercy and Greatham, near Hartlepool.

As revealed on our website yesterday, a Cleveland Police spokesman said: "The cycle was in a collision with a red Suzuki Swift vehicle.

"The 41-year-old driver of the vehicle has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving."

Dad-of-one Mr Bratt, from the Brierton area of Hartlepool, was on a silver mountain bike heading towards the A689 when the collision happened.

Mr Bratt's widow, Lynne, and son, Craig, 26, issued a moving family tribute after the tragedy in which they described their lost loved one as "one in a million".

Mr Bratt worked as an operator at Isocom Components, an electrical firm based on the Park View Industrial Estate in Hartlepool, and staff were given the day off as a mark of respect to him yesterday.

Director Paul Gillespie said: "I heard the news on Sunday morning, and I rang around all of the staff to tell them the factory would be closed on Monday.

"I read the tribute from Kevin's wife that described him as being one in a million, and I'd go along with that.

"He never had a bad word for anyone. He was a big Newcastle United supporter and he wouldn't even bad mouth the mackems!

"Kevin had worked here for about 15 years, we're a close-knit firm with around 15 staff and this has hit everyone hard. We are all devastated by the news."

Witnesses to the crash have come forward but police are still appealing for anyone who saw the collision and have not yet come forward or anyone who saw Mr Bratt on his bike before the smash to get in touch.
