A DRIVER had a lucky escape after his car overturned on a busy dual carriageway and landed in the central reservation.
The 52-year-old was driving a Nissan Terrano on the A19 southbound, just before the Hartlepool/Wingate A179 turn-off, when he lost control of his car.
The Terrano was towing a trailer full of floorboards which ended up scattered all over the A19 following the smash.
Both lanes of the southbound carriageway were closed for around an hour following the incident, at 11.30am on Monday.
Graham Chaytor, a crew manager at Peterlee Fire Station, which sent two appliances to the scene along with one from Wheatley Hill, said: “We thought it was going to be a lot worse, judging by what we saw when we arrived – the car was on its roof in the central reservation.
“But the driver escaped unhurt.”
The man was checked over by paramedics and staff from the Highways Agency cleared the scene.
