Drivers warned after thefts

MOTORISTS across the region are being warned to secure their spare wheels after a spate of thefts.

Cleveland Police have issued the warning after 29 were stolen across the force area since May of last year and crime prevention officers say the number of incidents has peaked over the last three months.

Police say transit vans are being targeted by thieves and have urge people to take simple steps to stay one step ahead of criminals by considering a range of options including storing the spare in the boot or alternatively a chain and padlock can be fitted, preferably one matching the Sold Secure standard.

Crime prevention officer for Stockton, PC Eddie Lincoln, said: “If drivers take steps to protect their vehicles against crime it will help to support our work on the ground in combating car criminals.

“I appreciate that it might be inconvenient for people to take time to find ways to secure their spare tyre but it is a worthwhile thing to do to prevent the hassle, costs and distress caused with being a victim of crime.

“Motorists can contact local dealerships to see if they have any devices to assist and owners of 4x4 vehicles with spare wheels should fit a locking wheel nut and locking spare wheel cover.”
