Explosion victim still in hospital

A MAN who suffered burns in an explosion at his house remains in hospital more than a week after the blast.

The 36-year-old remains in Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) after suffering burns to his hands and face following an explosion at his semi-detached house in Dawson Road, Wingate, around 8.15am on Tuesday, January 22.

The blast saw flames leaping out of a bedroom window while part of the gable end of the house was damaged.

Around a dozen neighbouring properties were evacuated for an hour until it was established that there was no further risk.

It was not thought that the man’s mother, who was also in the house at the time, was seriously hurt.

The cause of the explosion is still to be established as Durham Police and Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, who are conducting a joint investigation, are yet to speak to the man.

A Durham Police spokesman said: “The man is still in hospital and we are yet to speak to him.”
