Fairground chiefs allay fears over wheel safety
FAIRGROUND chiefs have moved to allay fears over the safety of a ride.
The 130ft-high Giant Wheel at the Headland Carnival was halted for a short time after a wire from a maintenance basket hit the canopy on one of the cars.
No-one was in the car at the time and workers carried out a maintenance check and the ride was soon given the all-clear to be started again.
John Murphy, organiser of the fairground at the Town Moor, said: "The basket is something that is used when we change the lights and carry out maintenance and a wire from it caught the canopy on one of the cars.
"There was no-one in the car. It was stopped for a short while and there was minor damage to the car and it was taken off.
"The wheel is safe and it's perfectly all right."
