THE weekend of last year’s Great North Run turned into a real family fundraising affair for a kind-hearted trio.

Generous brothers Josh and Liam Cooper and their dad Graham are long-term supporters of Hartlepool & District Hospice - raising cash for the charity on various occasions over the years.

And the kind family decided last year’s Great North Run was another opportunity to support the facility.

Josh, 17, and Liam, 10, a pupil at Hart Primary School, both signed up for the Junior Great North Run and completed the race on the Saturday, before motivated dad Graham, 42, toed the line for the main race and ran the 13.1 miles the day later. And the efforts of the three raised £385 for the Wells Avenue-based hospice.

Greg Hildreth, events fundraiser at the hospice, said: “It’s always a pleasure to catch up with Josh, Liam and the family to find out what they have been up to since I last saw them.

“They are a great team of fundraisers and we are hugely grateful for their ongoing support and kindness.

“As always, all of the money they have raised will be used to support our patients and their families and once again we would like to say a huge thanks to the Cooper family for their ongoing fantastic efforts in supporting the hospice.”

Josh and Liam, who live in the Bishop Cuthbert area of Hartlepool, are no strangers to the Junior Great North Run. They had completed the race a number of times before signing up to last year’s event.

And the family’s efforts in supporting the hospice over the year’s haven’t gone unrecognised.

Josh, a student at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, was honoured with the Newcastle Building Society Cornerstone of the Community award in 2012 for his charitable work for the hospice, after being nominated by the hospice and a string of other community projects he is involved in.

The hospice is again offering half marathon heroes the chance to take part in this year’s Great North Run and support the charity. A dedicated team of runners who took part in last year’s event raised more than £18,000 with sponsorship money still coming in.
