Family's fundraising day in memory of dad who died at Hartlepool Marina

Family and friends of a Hartlepool man who died suddenly at Hartlepool Marina are hoping to raise lots of money in his memory this weekend.

Relatives of Robert Welch, who died after choking at Navigation Point, are staging a day of fundraising on Saturday, July 2, in aid of Dementia UK.

Supporters will put on their running gear in the morning for a run around Stranton Primary School’s field.

And in the afternoon, everyone is invited to join in the fun and games taking place at Ye Olde Durhams social club in St Aidan’s Street.

Karen Welch, daughter of Robert, 67, who lived with dementia, said of their loss: “It is obviously devastating and was a shock. We are doing this in aid of Dementia UK because my dad had it and in memory of him.

“We hope lots of people help us support the charity, everybody is welcome.”

The club will be open between noon-5pm for raffles, children’s entertainment, pie and peas and hot dogs and an auction featuring some great items.

People can bid for a boxing glove belonging to Ricky Hatton and a signed Hartlepool United football.

The Mayor of Hartlepool, Councillor Rob Cook, and mayoress Brenda Cook, will attend after being invited by Karen’s mam Linda Wilkinson-Stephenson.

Karen’s sisters Mandy and Sarah have also helped bring the whole event together.

“We have got donations from the power station, Communicare and lots of prizes off various people,” added Karen, a cleaner at Stranton Primary School.

Admission is £1 for adults and children get in for free.
