Family pay tribute to fall victim
Tragic transport chief Peter Huntley in training for his planned trek to the North Pole
TRIBUTES have been paid to a Hartlepool-born transport chief who died while preparing for his latest charity effort.
Peter Huntley, managing director of Go North East bus company, was born and grew up in town before embarking on a successful career.
He tragically died on Sunday aged 55 when he fell from a 200ft peak in the Lake District while training for a charity trek to the North Pole.
Peter’s cousin Carol Grayson paid tribute to him as a “very generous man” who lived life to the full.
She said all his family are “absolutely devastated” at his sudden death.
Carol, 52, said: “He was very kind-hearted and very supportive to me in difficult times.
“He did an awful lot of work for charity and raised thousands, as well as doing voluntary work both here and abroad.
“Peter put a lot back into the community and was very well thought of.
“He was also very hard working and innovative.
“From very early on he had a love of transport.
“We were all absolutely devastated when we heard the news.”
Carol remembered visiting Peter in Spring Garden Road, Hartlepool, where he lived with his dad, Les, and brothers Stephen and David.
He previously worked for Hartlepool Corporation Transport and left town when he was around 18.
Up until his death he divided his time between his family in Preston, Lancashire, and Gateshead where he worked with Go North East.
Carol, who also lived in Hartlepool, now lives in Jesmond, Newcastle, added: “We were very good friends all our lives.
“We had been planning to meet up soon and share our news and catch up.”
Peter was a keen walker, cyclist and loved the outdoors.
He also loved travelling and the cinema.
For his latest charity drive, Peter was planning to trek from Russia to the Arctic Circle in April.
He hoped to raise £10,000 for the national transport charity Transaid.
Peter leaves behind his partner, Jenny, as well as two sons and a daughter.
