Fancy following in the footsteps of Mr Formby?

A GEORGE Formby fan is hoping to set up a ukulele group for music lovers in Hartlepool.

Councillor Geoff Lilley loves nothing more than strumming his ukulele and re-creating the sounds of the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

The 62-year-old, who learnt how to play the small guitar two-and-a-half years ago, also enjoys playing some of his all-time favourite songs by the late famous ukulele player Formby, who became a worldwide star with his hit When I’m Cleaning Windows.

Geoff, leader of town political group Putting Hartlepool First, often attends the Stockton and Darlington Eukele Express, which meets in Darlington, but would like to set up a group in the town.

So, the dad, step-dad and granddad, would like to hear from any other budding ukulele players, regardless of their skill or how long they have been playing.

Geoff, who also plays the mouth organ and the melodium – a small accordian – said: “I’ve had a ukulele for a few years now and I’ve actually managed to collect myself six of them. I love them, they’re such great instruments and are so easy to learn.

“I particularly like stuff from the 1930s, 40s and 50s best and also George Formby songs.”

He added: “I like to go to a eukele group in Darlington, and I’m interested in setting up a little group in Hartlepool but first I need to know whether anyone is interested in doing so. It doesn’t matter how good they are, whether they have no experience or a wealth or experience.

“It’d just be nice to get some people together who enjoy the sound of the ukulele to let ourselves go because we’ve all got music within us!”

Anyone interested a new group should contact Geoff on (01429) 291542 or email geoff.lilley@gmail.com
