Fens residents call for extra police cover

CAMPAIGNERS are calling for extra police resources for an area of town.

Councillors and resident representatives have joined forces with a residents' association.

They are requesting extra police resources for the joint policing area of the Fens estate, in Hartlepool, and Greatham village, on the outskirts of town.

At present, Fens and Greatham have one police constable and one police community support officer (PCSO) dedicated to the two wards.

Many residents believe that such a large geographical area needs at least one more PCSO dedicated to it. Chairman of the Fens Residents' Association Robert Smith said: "The councillors and resident representatives who have co-signed the request to Superintendent Ashman for an extra PCSO are of one accord with us on this issue.

"Whilst we acknowledge that when a serious incident occurs, police resources can be rapidly deployed from elsewhere, the ethos of neighbourhood policing cannot possibly be lived up to with only one PCSO who has to cover, on foot, a huge area stretching from Saltaire Terrace, Greatham, to Kesteven Road, on the Fens."

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "The residents' request is being considered and a decision will be made as soon as possible."
