Fertility machine demonstration

THE eyes of the medical world were focused on Hartlepool when an amazing piece of fertility equipment was showcased at the town's hospital.

Little bigger in size and shape than a conventional household toaster the amazing advance in technology could bring joy to countless childless couples.

The pioneering technology could increase the survival of frozen embryos by up to 90 per cent.

It was trialled at the University Hospital of Hartlepool by principle embryologist David Gibbon who is hopeful it could become a permanent feature at the town hospital.

A workshop and demonstration was given in what which health trust staff said was a fantastic event.

The new technique, which freezes embryos, was unveiled just weeks ago and health bosses in Hartlepool were keen for it to be brought across for closer inpsection.

The new Vitrolife Rapid-i system, in which embryos are frozen more quickly and in one swift operation, pushes the survival rate up tp 90 per cent from the current 70 per cent.

The system was launched at the end of June at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Rome and its appearance in Hartlepool is one of the first times it has gone on display in the country.

Mr Gibbon, who was at the University Hospital of Hartlepool yesterday to view the equipment, said: "We are proud to be at the forefront of science and to be able to offer this to people in Hartlepool and the surrounding area."

The assisted reproduction unit at the University Hospital of Hartlepool opened in December 2008.

Health bosses say its state-of-the-art facilities rival those of any London clinic while the latest equipment will take it to an even higher level.
