Firework yobs filmed shop attack

A TERROR mob hurled a firework into a shop and recorded the explosion on their mobile phones.

Two women shop assistants were behind the counter at the Bungalow Stores, in Stratford Road, Hartlepool, when the attack happened.

They escaped injury but were left shocked.

Police are now seeking help to trace the gang of up to 15 youths.

The explosion set a stack of toilet roles on fire and filled the shop with smoke.

A store worker, who was not there at the time but saw the aftermath, said: "The fridge was full of black powder. The toilet roles had smouldered and damaged a shelf.

"The place was full of smoke and you could smell the burning in the air. I can imagine how scary it must have been to be in the shop at the time."

When security camera footage of the incident was checked, it only showed an arm throwing the firework through the store's door.

Shop owner Michael Jones said: "My father came over to check things out and he said it was bad.

"This is the first time something like this has happened here."

The store has been cleaned and is trading as normal, with the damaged stock all replaced.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: "This was an extremely dangerous thing to do. It was very frightening for the staff but thankfully no one was hurt.

"Shopkeepers cannot afford this kind of thing happening to their store and it is lucky there was not more damage or anybody hurt."

The incident took place on Friday, November 2, at 7.40pm.

Anyone with any information is urged to ring the police on (01642) 302126 or Crimestoppers on (0800) 555111.
