MORE than a dozen firefighters have spent several hours tackling a blaze at a derelict building overnight.

The unused building, in Ellison Road, Peterlee, has been completely destroyed after it went up in flames at around 1.20am on Tuesday morning.

Two appliances from Peterlee were called but needed assistance and two more appliances rushed to the scene.

Firefighters were still at the building at 7am.

Nobody was in the building and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire will now be launched.

Police officers have also been in attendance along with a total of 14 firefighters.

Peterlee Fire Station watch manager Richie Morgan said: “There’s nothing much left of the building at all, it’s been completely destroyed.”
