A LONG-STANDING friend of a man killed on New Year’s Eve has laid a floral tribute outside of the house where he was attacked.

Shocked Bobby Gill made his way to the house in Hutton Avenue – where the man, named locally as former town boxer Mark Denton, had been to a house party to celebrate New Year’s Eve – to pay his respects to his friend.

The 34-year-old, who knew Mark from the Headland Amateur Boxing Club, said he heard the shocking and sad news this morning.

The dad-of-two, who works as a ground worker for Stockton Borough Council, said: “Mark was just a nice lad. He was just one of the lads. I’m totally shocked to be honest I can’t believe it. I’ve known him for about 15 years and I know him through the boxing gym that my brother-in-law runs. I went out drinking with him sometimes.”

He added: “I just heard this morning that he’d been to a house party with another lad from the Headland. I heard that he walked through the door and somebody hit him over the head with an ice pick type thing like what you climb up ice walls with.

“Then a fight is supposed to have started with the lad Mark was with and some others, and Mark was just laid there on the floor.

“It’s just awful. I just wanted to go up and lay some flowers and pay my respects.”
