Fundraisers set for '˜walk in the dark' for child cancer charity

A number of different course areas from East Durham College, in Willerby Grove, Peterlee, have come together in aid of the Childhood Eye Cancer Charity Trust (CHECT).

This week is CHECT’s world retinoblastoma awareness week, with this year’s theme being ‘in the dark’. Events across the week at the college have included visually impaired bricklaying, blindfolded mannequin beard trims, hair styles and beauty treatments and visually impaired art. The sport department have held blindfolded boxing spars and blindfolded penalty shootouts.

The Scene1 restaurant at the college is also holding a dinner in the dark event, and the week will be rounded off with a walk in the dark around Peterlee tonight. The female-only walk is open to all.

People will be meeting in the Black Bull, Peterlee, from 7.30pm with the walk starting at 9pm.

The dress code for the event is black, with glow in the dark accessories provided on the evening.

College lecturer Alison Scattergood, from Peterlee, has organised the events as she was herself was diagnosed with the rare eye cancer retinoblastoma at just six weeks old. She was successfully treated for the condition at the Sunderland Eye Infirmary.

Alison said: “All the teams at the college this week have been fantastic. The walk in the dark will be a fitting end to a brilliant week, and I would love to see as many people as possible come along and take part.”
