A FUNDRAISING group planning to carry out a 10-mile charity run in aid of a brave schoolboy are urging people in the town to give generously.
Instructors and members of the John Dawson Close Combat Arena, in George Street, Hartlepool, are doing the lengthy run in support of a charity chosen by 15-year-old Ethan Wilson, who is fighting life-threatening blood cancer acute myeloid leukaemia.
Ethan, who is a member of the martial arts group, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, and he selected the charity called Newcastle Cancer Trust for any money raised at the event to go towards helping to research cancer. The race is taking place at Summerhill on Sunday, March 23.
One of the race organisers, Martin McKie, said: “We can’t wait to do the run and we’re hoping that as many people show their support as possible.
“We’ve set up a fundraising link and a text number for people to make a donation if they would like to.
“It’s for a brilliant cause.”
Brave Ethan was studying for his mock GCSE exams at English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College in Hartlepool when he became unusually lethargic and feeling generally unwell.
His concerned family thought his condition may have been due to the stress of the exams, but as it gradually worsened they took him to his GP, who initially believed there may have been something wrong with his stomach.
But blood tests at the Royal Victoria Infirmary revealed the shock news that Ethan had leukaemia.
Since his diagnosis in November last year, the plucky teen has started chemotherapy and is now onto his third course of gruelling treatment. If the treatment is unsuccessful, it may lead to Ethan needing a bone marrow transplant.
Despite his condition, Ethan, from the Rift House area, is determined to keep up with his studies with a home tutor as he is too ill to attend school where the risk of infection is too great. He also has his sights set on studying IT at Hartlepool College of Further Education when he leaves school later this year.
Anyone who would like to make a donation to the charity run can do so by logging on to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/cca10milerun or by texting ETHA77 £5 to 70070. You can donate more or less by text by just changing the £5 to £1 or £10.
