A GOLDEN couple walked down the aisle to renew their vows – 50 years after they tied the knot.

Robert and Mary Nattress say the key to their long and happy marriage is trust.

After celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, Mary, 67, said: “We have had our ups and downs, everyone does but trust is the key.”

The couple met in a pub in Shotton and tied the knot at Easington Register Office on February 23 1963.

Last Saturday, on the day of the couple’s 50th anniversary together, they walked down the aisle again in front of more than 100 family and friends at Thornley Methodist Chapel as they renewed their vows.

“It was a fantastic day,” said Mary, a retired domestic cleaner who worked at Sherburn Hospital, in Durham.

“The celebration lasted all day and it was lovely to have all of our family and friends there.

“The best present we got was a helicopter ride that we can use any time until October.”

After their wedding Mary and Robert, a retired miner, moved to Birmingham for four years before moving back to East Durham to Thornley where they have lived since.

The couple have four children, Pauline Nattress, 49, Carol Nattress, 48, Wendy Atkinson, 47, and Colin Nattress, 44, as well as six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
