Graffiti yob terrorised street

A TEENAGER who daubed abusive graffiti on cars and homes has been slapped with a two-year anti-yob order.

Shamed Timothy Webb regularly hurled insults and threats at people living in Hartlepool's Furness Street, making their lives a misery.

The 19-year-old's tirade of abuse resulted in a "serious" street fracas which saw police rushing to the street and extra officers being drafted in for back-up.

But his reign of terror ended after a joint effort by the Hartlepool Anti-social Behaviour Unit (Asbu), residents, neighbourhood police officers and landlords Home Group secured an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) against the menace at Hartlepool Magistrates Court.

And justices warned disgraced Webb, who sat smirking

in court, that if he does not curb his unruly behaviour and abide by the Asbo's rules then he risks going to prison.

Chairman of the bench Kate Brown said: "I hope you understand the seriousness of the offence because it seems to me from your conduct that you don't.

"You need to keep out of trouble, preferably for the rest of your life. However, if you persist while this order is in place then you might go to prison."

Webb initially suggested that he had been the one being harassed by police, but then replied: "Not a problem, I can do that and I do appreciate the seriousness of it."

Nicholas Stone, senior anti-social behaviour officer for the Asbu, told the Mail: "Problems that this individual caused in this area spurred everyone on to work together to obtain this order.

"We couldn't have done it without everybody's input and I'm sure this is going to make a difference for the residents of that area.

"Hopefully Webb will stay out of trouble because if he doesn't abide by the Asbo's rules then he will be arrested by police."

Mr Stone said the Asbu decided to pursue an Asbo against Webb following the "serious and very public street row" on June 4 when he was drunk, began harassing a female resident and police had to be called.

On June 12 an intoxicated Webb threatened several people in Furness Street and the following day spray-painted abusive graffiti on the front of several houses and cars, he said.

"We felt that this behaviour was a risk to local residents and so serious that it would justify an Asbo and the court agreed because we got a temporary order on June 16," he said. "Magistrates agreed to a full order on Monday."

The Asbo, which is the 29th such order issued against Hartlepool's yobs, bans Webb, of Addison Road, from:

* Using threatening, intimidating, insulting or abusive words or behaviour in any place to which the public have access;

* Approaching or communicating directly or indirectly with residents from that area;

* Entering Furness Street and its back alleys.

A leaflet, showing Webb's mugshot and detailing the terms of his Asbo, is set to be posted to homeowners in the Furness Street area over the next few days.
