Green light for bus fare increase

A PLAN to increase bus fares have been given the green light by civic chiefs.

Stagecoach North East is increasing fares by 5p on all commercial and supported bus services in Hartlepool, as a result of rising fuel and maintenance costs.

But prices for Dayrider, Daytripper and Megarider weekly and monthly tickets will stay the same for the time being. Stagecoach say the rise, which is the first since 2008, is necessary to pay for increasing fuel costs, plus an anticipated increase in wages.

Bosses approached Hartlepool Borough Council for permission to increase prices on supported services in line with increases to their commercial services.

Labour councillor Peter Jackson, portfolio holder for transport and neighbourhoods, approved the rise to avoid confusion for passengers.

Speaking at a council meeting yesterday, Coun Jackson, said: "It is important to point out that the last rise was two years ago and with rising fuel and maintenance costs I think it is a fair rise."

He added that he would like to see if it was possible for bus users to use their Dayrider, Daytripper and Megarider tickets on services run by other companies.

Council officers said they would raise the issue at the next regional bus forum, which sees Tees Valley local authorities meeting regional bus companies.

Earlier this week, commercial director of Stagecoach North East, Robin Knight, told the Mail the increase to single fares was largely due to an increase in fuel costs as well as a rise in general operational costs.

The Megarider ticket offers a week's unlimited travel across Hartlepool for 8.50 and the Dayrider ticket is available for 2.90. For more information about the changes call 0871 2002233.
