H'Angus going on the run for charity

HARTLEPOOL United mascot H'Angus the Monkey is under starting orders for a derby clash of his own in a bid to raise money for a national charity.

The cheeky chimp will go head-to-head with other mascots from Football League clubs across the country to contest the first-ever Daffodil Derby.

The charity fun run launches a new partnership with national charity Marie Curie Cancer Care, which has been chosen by fans as the Football League's official charity partner for the coming season.

Each mascot will be raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care to provide care, free of charge, to terminally ill patients in their own homes and in its hospices.

Every 20 raised will pay for an hour's free nursing care.

The man behind the suit, married dad-of-two Scott Llewellyn, has been gearing up for the event by taking part in the NHS Tees Challenge, which sees a team of runners complete four road races across the area during 2010.

The 38-year-old, who works as a machine operator at Corus, said: "It is always great to meet up with the other mascots and take them on in a charity challenge.

"It should be good fun. But you can never tell what is going to happen in a mascot race."

Football League director of external affairs, Gavin Megaw, said: "This is a fantastic occasion by which to launch our partnership with Marie Curie Cancer Care.

"I would encourage all football and racing fans and their families to come along to help raise money for this great cause.

"Good luck to all of the mascots taking part in the Daffodil Derby."

Entrants for the Daffodil Derby are under orders at Southwell Racecourse, near Newark, on Tuesday, August 3, at 7.45pm.
