A MUCH-LOVED mum and grandmother has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Ethel Morris, a resident at Four Winds Residential Home, in Elwick Road, Hartlepool, reached the milestone birthday on Saturday.

And to celebrate 10 decades of life, the popular pensioner had a party with her family, friends and staff at the home.

Today her son Peter Morris said his mum’s secret to a long and happy life was “keeping active, keeping busy and not drinking”.

Peter, 63, a retired civil engineer, from Colwyn Road, near to the Burn Valley, said that his mum even used to ice cakes, including wedding cakes, in her spare time.

And in the 60s, Ethel – who is mum to Peter and the late Tom who died aged 68 seven years ago – even iced the wedding cake of former Hartlepool United manager Billy Horner.

Peter, who is married to Linda Morris, 62, a retired Housing Hartlepool warden, said: “Even when she wasn’t at work she used to ice cakes as a past time really and did quite a few wedding cakes, including Billy Horner’s in the 60’s. He was Hartlepool United’s manager, which she was proud of.”

He added: “My mam is pretty healthy and she takes very little medication. She never drank apart from the occasional sherry. Her memory isn’t the best, but she’s happy and that’s the main thing.

“I’d say the secret to her long life is continuing to work and keeping her self busy.”

Ethel grew up in Ferryhill and when she left school, worked in domestic service in various houses in Yorkshire.

She met her husband Tommy Morris, who passed away in 1993 aged 80, and the pair married just before the Second World War in 1936, and lived together in Highcliffe Terrace, Ferryhill.

Ethel, a grandmother-of-four and great-grandmother-of-two, lived there up until she was 93 years old and when she could no longer cope due to old age she moved to Hartlepool to be nearer to Peter, who has lived in the town for 40 years, and moved into sheltered housing complex Richard Court.

She moved into Four Winds four years ago.

Peter said: “We’re very proud that she’s reached 100 and we had a little party for her in Four Winds.

“She is a lovely person. She could be funny, and also very forthright in her opinions. She called a spade a spade if you know what I mean.”
