AN ADVICE service is urging employers to play fair – or face potential legal action.
Hartlepool Citizens Advice Bureau says it has seen increasing cases of employees coming to them for help after being denied their rights.
Employment law is one of the advice bureau’s specialities and says workers should know their rights.
Advice bureau manager Joe Michna said: “We have seen a number of clients during the last month or so in connection with various employment law matters.
“The three most frequent enquiries we have received are in connection with the national minimum wage, and the right to receive pay slips and written statements of terms and conditions of employment.
“These are all statutory rights.
“We continually see people who in some cases have been employed for many years but have never been given a written statement of their terms and conditions of employment by their employer.
“There is legal action employees can take if their employer is not abiding by the law and the CAB can provide full advice and assistance for them.”
Within the last few weeks, three employees have gone to the bureau because they had not been receiving the minimum wage.
The national minimum wage is currently £6.31 for workers aged over 21, £5.03 an hour for 18-20 year-olds, £3.72 for anyone aged 16 and 17, and £2.68 at apprenticeships rate.
Mr Michna said some employees, particularly those only working a few a hours, are not been given itemised pay statements which they are entitled to receive.
By law, all employees are also entitled to receive a written statement of their terms and conditions of employment after two months of working.
Mr Michna said this is the employment right that employers fail to meet the most.
And he stressed the same laws apply to voluntary and community sector employers after they advised workers from two local charities who had not failed received their full and proper employment rights.
