FIREFIGHTERS were sent to tackle a fire at a derelict seaside building.

Two crews from Stranton Fire Station were sent to the former Coasters bar at the run-down Longscar Centre, on The Front at Seaton Carew on Monday evening.

Fire chiefs say someone had gained entry despite the building being boarded up, and then set fire to a swivel chair inside.

The spokesman said: “The boarding had been breached and someone set fire to an office chair.

“The inside is destroyed anyway just from decay.

“The fire damage was just to the chair.”

Firefighters were sent to the scene at 8.15pm on Monday and spent 20 minutes putting out the fire with a canvas bucket and water.

The Mail reported in March that the building’s owners Barry and Terrence Wilkinson unveiled plans to transform the site into a hub of restaurants, pubs and arcades after settling a long-running dispute over the premises.

Meanwhile, a crew from Peterlee Fire Station was sent to the beach banks near Seaview Gardens in Horden, where 1,600 sq ft of grass and gorse was alight.

The crew spent an hour in attendance, from 6.20pm on Monday, and fire chiefs suspect that the cause is suspicious.
