Hartlepool outdoor market evacuated after ‘suspicious package’ found

AN OUTDOOR market was evacuated after police were informed of a “suspicious package”.

A rucksack had been left in the area of the outdoor market near to Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, in Hartlepool.

A member of the public spotted the bag and contacted police for fear that it may have been suspect.

Officers attended the scene at 12.45pm and evacuated the area while investigations took place.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said the situation was assessed and deemed to be safe.

She said: “We had a report of a suspicious package, a rucksack which had been left in the area of the outdoor market.

“Officers were stood down by 1pm when the situation was deemed safe.”
