Hartlepool parents appeal for school drainage funding

West View Primary School in Davidson Drive, Hartlepool, is gearing up to hold a summer fair on July 9 in the hope of raising enough funds to fix an ongoing drainage problem.

Currently, Key Stage One pupils at the school are unable to play outside when it rains as the water floods the yard.

PTA group members Lynn Wallis and Donna Simpson-Shaw, from Garside Drive, have taken it upon themselves to launch the appeal.

Donna, 31, said: “When it rains or even drizzles, the school yard floods and playtime is cancelled.

“It is a problem that has been going on since the school opened 15 years ago.”

The school have been given the estimation that the work may cost around £30,000 for the system to be replaced and the PTA are hoping local businesses will get behind the appeal by donating raffle and tombola prizes or rent a stall for the charity fun day.

Head of School, Charlotte Haylock, said she was pleased with the fundraising efforts that the parents have decided to do themselves, but stressed that although the work is estimated at around £30,000 it may be that the parents do not need to raise the full funds.

She said: “A group of parents asked to do some fundraising towards repairing and putting in a better drainage system on the Key Stage One yard. This has developed further into a formalised PTA which is now fundraising for this cause.”
