Hartlepool pupils make coin trail to raise funds for Unicef

Youngsters at a Hartlepool school created a coin trail around their school as part of '˜A Day for Change' to raise funds for Unicef.

The pupils at Eskdale Academy in Eskdale Road, Hartlepool, dug deep and brought in their spare change to make a trail of coins from one end of the school to the other, raising £157.40 for the charity.

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation which ensures that children in over 190 countries are vaccinated, educated and protected from danger.

Each class had a five minute slot to add their coins to the trail, which covered the whole length of the first floor of the school.

The fundraiser was the first of its kind that Eskdale Academy has taken part in and saw all of its pupils bring in their spare change to donate to the charity.

Assistant headteacher Rachel Wainwright, who organised the project, said the school was working towards the Unicef UK Rights Respecting Schools Award which aimed to educate pupils on the rights that children are entitled to, something Unicef supports.

She said: “We are very pleased with the total from the fundraising challenge.

“We decided to do it as we are working towards our level one Rights Respecting Schools Award and wanted to support Unicef.

“The children have been learning to think of their rights and what kind of rights they are entitled to.
“We have been discussing their right to free play and the right to be the best they can be.

“We plan to do another fundraiser for Unicef in the future.”
