Rather than dressing up as their favourite literary characters, children at Hutton Henry CofE Primary School recruited their parents to help them bake book-themed treats.

The youngsters made cakes and cookies based on stories including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Beauty and the Beast, and favourite characters such as Spider-Man.

They presented their creations to teachers and fellow pupils at the school, in Front Street, Henry Hutton, before taking them home to tuck in.

Headteacher Susan Gibbins said: “We’ve always dressed up for World Book Day so decided to do something different this year instead and have a book bake.

“We asked families to bring in a bake that had a book theme and we had some fantastic creations.

“The children loved it and members of the student council helped judge the entries, although it was a very tough job because they were all so brilliant.

“It was really well received so we’ll think of something different to do next year too.”

The school also took part in a mass read on World Book Day, along with other members of the Peterlee Partnership Teaching Alliance.

As part of a year-long promotion of reading for fun, which is being supported by Durham University and the Open University, pupils from 36 schools took part.

At 1.30pm on World Book Day, 4,440 pupils across the schools sat down to read a book at the same time.

Mrs Gibbins added: “It was all about getting across that reading is for pleasure too and we’re working to promote that throughout the whole year.

“We thought World Book Day was the perfect time to do a mass read and the pupils were really excited knowing that there were so many other children doing the same thing as them at the same time.

“We’ll be continuing to promote reading for fun for the rest of the year.”
