Have a say on bus service cuts

PEOPLE are being asked for their views on how expected cuts in a council's public transport budget should be implemented.

As part of the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review this autumn, Durham County Council is bracing itself for reductions in Government funding of up to 30 per cent, and the local authority wants the public to help decide how best to implement the impact on public transport.

The council's head of transport Adrian White said: "Obviously we want to minimise the impact of any reductions on members of the public so who best to turn to for their views on this.

"We are expecting significant reductions in local authority funding in October and, rather than announce we are cutting this or that service, we would really appreciate hearing what the people who use and operate these services think."

Mr White said the council currently spends around 4.5m a year securing bus services which would not be commercially viable for operators without the authority's support.

He added: "That equates to about 20 per cent of all bus journeys, but we are in challenging times and the operating costs are increasing as grants are reducing.

"The price of fuel alone is a significant issue."

To have a say on how best to reduce bus services with minimum impact, take part in the consultation by emailing passengertransport@durham.gov.uk, by writing to Bus Service Consultation, Passenger Transport, Regeneration and Economic Development, Durham County Council, County Hall, Durham, DH1 5UQ, or at www.durham.gov.uk under 'Have Your Say' section.

The consultation will run until Friday, September 24, with feedback being considered and action taken following the publication of the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review announcement in October.

Necessary changes would not be implemented until January 2011.
